Why using organic plant-based hair color?

Plant-based hair color is a natural and healthy alternative to conventional chemical dye. Pigments derived from tinctorial plants coat the hair shaft without opening the cuticles, without penetrating the cortex or entering the bloodstream. Hair is not weakened — on the contrary, each application strengthens and protects it.

Plant-based hair color visibly improves hair health: density, shine and resilience increase with repeated use. The tinctorial plants selected for Tresse have well-established pigmentary properties and recognised hair-care benefits.

Tresse plant-based hair color is 100% certified organic (COSMOS Organic) and contains no endocrine disruptors, no PPD, no resorcinol, no chemical oxidants, no heavy metals, no metallic salts and no synthetic colour boosters. It is the natural choice for colouring your hair while respecting both your health and the environment.

What is the difference between plant-based hair color and chemical hair color?

Tresse plant-based hair color coats the hair cuticles without breaking them, unlike oxidative chemical dye, which uses alkaline agents to open the cuticles, penetrate the shaft and enter the bloodstream. Repeated chemical treatments weaken the fibre, making it brittle and porous.

Plant-based color acts on the surface: pigments from tinctorial plants envelop the cuticles and seal them without altering the structure. Each application is also a nourishing treatment that reinforces the hair fibre. It contains no PPD, no resorcinol, no ammonia — the main causes of allergic reactions and hair damage linked to chemical dye.

One practical distinction: plant-based hair color cannot lighten hair, unlike chemical oxidation. It intensifies and tones without erasing natural colour. If you are looking for a shade lift, a chemical pre-lightening step would be required first.

How to choose my color ?

Tresse plant-based hair color blends with your natural hair colour and protects the hair fibre. We recommend choosing the shade closest to your natural colour, or one tone above for a more defined result.

Our range offers six shades from luminous blonde to intense black, including hazelnut, deep chestnut, light chestnut and espresso. Each shade is formulated to deliver beautiful natural highlights and cover grey hair without an artificial, helmet-like effect. Since the formula contains no chemical oxidants, it cannot lighten — it tones, intensifies and seals the hair fibre.

If your hair has been chemically treated (highlights, bleaching, perms), perform a strand test first. If you are unsure, send us a photo at [email protected]: our team will guide you towards the most suitable shade for your hair profile.

Does plant-based hair color cover gray hair?

Yes, Tresse plant-based hair color covers grey hair naturally, without an artificial, uniform look. Unlike chemical dye, which homogenises colour evenly, our plant-based formula blends grey hair into the chosen shade for a gradual, natural result.

Grey hair is particularly receptive to plant pigments because it lacks melanin and absorbs more colour. Coverage is complete and integrates harmoniously with naturally coloured strands, without sharp demarcation or artificial effect.

For optimal coverage, respect the recommended processing time for your chosen shade. If you have more than 30% grey hair, consider our Two-Step method (Base + Colour) for a more intense and even result. The final colour is visible 48 hours after rinsing, once the plant pigments have oxidised on contact with air. Grey hair often develops beautiful, rich-looking tones with plant-based colour.

How long does plant-based hair color last?

Tresse plant-based hair color is permanent: once the plant pigments are fixed to the hair fibre, the colour does not wash out with a single shampoo. It is long-lasting — this is the very nature of the tinctorial plants we use.

Like any permanent colour, it fades gradually over time, with repeated washing and sun exposure. A slight natural lightening occurs over the weeks. Expect 6 to 9 weeks before visible fading — which contributes to the natural look of plant-based colour, far from the artificial effect of chemical dye.

To preserve intensity, use gentle colour-safe shampoos without harsh sulphates and avoid products containing silicones. A root touch-up can be performed as soon as regrowth is visible, without any risk of over-pigmentation on previously coloured lengths. Plant-based color darkens slightly in the 48 hours after application as pigments oxidise.

What is the difference with other organic hair colors? Which plant-based hair color should I choose?

We have formulated our products with the aim of achieving 100% organic certification, and we have worked extensively on chroma and color rendering in order to offer natural shades, with an impact-based approach and a French manufacturing chain.

Can I switch from chemical to plant-based coloring?

Of course, if the previous coloring was an oxidation coloring. If in doubt, send us a message and a picture to [email protected]

Is Tresse plant-based color suitable for pregnant and nursing women?

Yes, Tresse plant-based hair color is fully suitable for pregnant and nursing women. This is one of the main reasons why many women turn to plant-based hair color during pregnancy.

Our formula contains no endocrine disruptors, no chemical oxidants, no PPD, no resorcinol, no heavy metals and no ammonia-based agents. The plant pigments derived from tinctorial plants do not open the cuticles and do not penetrate the bloodstream, unlike oxidative chemical dyes.

Our range is certified COSMOS Organic and contains neither essential oils nor regulated allergens. The complete INCI list is available on each product page on our website. We are available at [email protected] for any questions about the formula before or during your pregnancy. Each ingredient has been verified and validated by an independent certification body as part of our COSMOS Organic commitment.

Does it contain essential oils and allergens?

No, Tresse plant-based hair color contains neither essential oils nor allergens listed under European cosmetics regulations.

Our formula was developed with COSMOS Organic certification as a target, which sets strict requirements for every ingredient — all verified and validated by independent certification bodies. Essential oils, although natural, can be irritating to the scalp or trigger allergic reactions; we excluded them to ensure the best possible tolerance, especially for pregnant women and those with sensitive skin.

Our hair color does not contain the 26 regulated allergens identified by the European cosmetics directive, nor PPD (para-phenylenediamine), nor resorcinol, nor ammonia or its derivatives. The complete INCI list is available on each product page. In the case of known skin hypersensitivity, we recommend performing a strand test before the first application. Our formula is regularly audited by independent laboratories to ensure full compliance.

Use

How to apply Tresse organic color?

The application of Tresse plant-based hair color is done in 5 steps:

1. WASH your hair with a silicone-free shampoo, then gently towel-dry. Color is applied to damp hair, never dry.

2. MIX the plant powder with lukewarm water according to the instructions until you obtain a smooth paste.

3. APPLY generously to the entire head of hair, or only to the roots for a touch-up, massaging thoroughly for even penetration into the hair fibre.

4. PROCESS for the time indicated for your shade — this processing time is essential to the final result and cannot be shortened.

5. RINSE thoroughly with plain water, without shampoo.

Wait at least 48 hours before the next shampoo: the colour reaches its final tone within two days, once the pigments have oxidised on contact with air. Avoid heat styling during this period.

How to stabilize organic color?

It naturally sets thanks to the reaction with the air, with a definitive result within a few days.

How to rinse organic color?

Just with clear water. Be careful not to dry hair at too high a temperature so as not to 'burn' the color

How to maintain my organic color?

Nous recommandons d’utiliser des produits et soins capillaires bio, sans silicones ni parabènes.

Which shampoo to use with plant-based coloring?

We recommend using organic products and hair care, without silicones or parabens.

Does plant-based coloring dry out the hair?

The vegetable coloring coats the hair, makes it stronger, and can in some cases make it drier. If you notice that your hair is drier with each application, we recommend that you apply an after-shampoo treatment.

How to do a root touch-up?

In the case of a maintenance plant color (roots), you can apply it only on the regrowth (while respecting the application time)

Why a long exposure time?

The application time varies depending on the color chosen. To color your hair with plants, you must be patient, because natural pigments have a long release time. Respect the application time, the success of the coloring depends on it.

Why do a color test on a strand of hair?

The natural plant pigments react naturally with your hair, and the final color result depends on your hair’s structure, nature, characteristics, current color and ability to absorb color.
Results from plant-based dyes can’t be standardized. Any chemical modifications, such as chemical dyes, bleaching, balayage or highlights, increase the intensity of plant-based colors. When hair has been made more sensitive and the cuticles opened up, color can be different and more intense, since the hair “drinks” the color.
Take the time to conduct a test on a strand of hair to be sure of the results on your hair.
If you’ve had a conventional dyeing process, bleaching, highlights, balayage, a permanent blowout or straightening, wait four weeks before using Tresse and do a test on a lock of hair.
If you have more than 40% gray hair, the overall color result may be less intense.

What does plant-based coloring smell like?

It has a very specific smell (spinach/wood fire), which will also fade after 3 to 4 shampoos.

Disgorging plant-based coloring?

It can take 3 to 4 shampoos for the color to bleed through, while the excess pigment is being washed out. Be sure to dry your hair well before getting dressed, to avoid any colored halo on light clothes.

You have two options: Either give it time to work - plant-based color will gradually fade after 6 to 9 weeks. Or use a natural mask (e.g. white clay and coconut oil) to lighten a nuance that is too dark for your taste. This will not lighten the basic color of your hair but will rectify the shade a little.

How to remove plant-based coloring?

Contrary to popular belief, plant-based hair color cannot be removed with a simple shampoo. The pigments from tinctorial plants adhere durably to the hair fibre — this is precisely what makes it permanent.

Option 1 — Patience: plant-based color fades naturally over 6 to 9 weeks with regular washing and gradual sun exposure. This is the gentlest method for the hair fibre and requires no additional products.

Option 2 — Natural masks: regular applications of white clay mixed with coconut oil can speed up the fading process. They allow you to gradually lighten the shade without damaging the hair. A chemical bleach can remove plant-based color but will damage the fibre — we advise against this option. If you are unsure about the next step, contact us at [email protected] with a photo of your hair for personalised advice.

Plant-based coloring coloring that does not hold? / Plant-based coloring coloring that does not take?

Plant-based hair color is tenacious. If you respected the application time and the instructions, your hair color will "take".

Plant-based coloring turning green?

When a formula contains indigo (Indigofera tinctoria), you may notice a greenish or khaki tint on light hair — white, grey or blonde — just after rinsing. Do not panic: this is a completely normal and temporary phenomenon, linked to the chemical nature of indigo before it has fully oxidised.

Indigo releases blue-violet pigments which, on hair without melanin, can momentarily create this cool-toned appearance. This is not a formulation defect but a characteristic of indigo-based tinctorial plants.

Within a few hours, the pigments oxidise on contact with air and naturally transform to reveal the desired brown or black shade. The final colour is visible at 48 hours. If green tones persist beyond 72 hours after rinsing, contact us at [email protected] with a photo so we can advise you on next steps.

Plant-based coloring turning red?

We have designed our colorings to not 'turn'. It is possible that if you pre-pigment white hair, you may get very slight red highlights, which will also fade.
