Plant-based hair dye after post-partum hair loss (telogen effluvium)
What is post-partum telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium is a diffuse and temporary hair loss that occurs when a large number of hair follicles shift simultaneously into their resting phase (telogen phase). Under normal conditions, around 10 to 15% of hairs are in the telogen phase at any given time. During telogen effluvium, this proportion can jump to 30–50% at once, causing visible and sometimes alarming hair loss.
After childbirth, oestrogen levels — which had kept follicles in the growth phase throughout pregnancy — drop sharply. This hormonal shift triggers the synchronised movement of follicles into the telogen phase. Shedding typically begins between 2 and 4 months post-partum, peaks around months 4 to 6, and resolves naturally in most cases before 12 months.
Can you colour your hair during telogen effluvium?
Telogen effluvium is not a contraindication to plant-based hair dye. Unlike chemical dyes that alter the structure of the hair shaft, plant-based powders do not attack hair follicles or disrupt the hair growth cycle.
Points to watch during the active phase:
- The scalp may be more sensitive and reactive than usual.
- Strictly avoid any product containing ammonia, hydrogen peroxide or PPD.
- Use lukewarm (not hot) water for rinsing to avoid stimulating further shedding.
Plant-based dye and breastfeeding: compatibility
The breastfeeding question is both legitimate and common. Tresse Paris plant-based hair dye is made exclusively from powdered colouring plants — no solvents, no oxidants, no synthetic chemical agents. Systemic absorption of plant-based pigments through intact skin is extremely low and presents no documented risk during breastfeeding.
As a sensible precaution:
- Ventilate the room well during preparation and application (even though the risk is low, good ventilation is always advisable).
- Rinse thoroughly — until the water runs completely clear — to eliminate all residue.
- If you have any doubt, consult your midwife or GP before the first application.
The benefits of plant-based dye on weakened hair
One of the least-known but most appreciated effects of plant-based hair dye is its action on the hair shaft. Plant-based powders — particularly henna and cassia — deposit a film of natural pigments that coats the fibre. This coating has tangible mechanical effects:
- Increased visual volume: the fine hair associated with effluvium appears thicker and denser.
- Improved fibre strength: henna in particular reinforces keratin, making hair less prone to breakage.
- Natural shine: the surface smoothed by the pigments reflects light more effectively.
This is not a medical hair treatment, but it provides a real visual boost during a period when hair can look dull and flat.
What plant-based dye does not replace
Plant-based dye does not accelerate regrowth. It has no action on the follicular cycle. To support regrowth during post-partum telogen effluvium, several complementary approaches can be considered:
- Nutrition: post-partum effluvium is often worsened by deficiencies in iron, zinc and protein, which are common after delivery. A blood test (ferritin, thyroid panel, full blood count) is recommended if shedding persists beyond 6 months.
- Supplementation: specific post-partum supplements (vitamin D, iron, biotin) can support regrowth under medical advice.
- Gentle hair care: avoid stripping shampoos, aggressive brushing and excessive heat.
Application protocol adapted to effluvium
- Gentle shampoo 24–48 hours before: clean but not irritated scalp.
- Paste preparation: lukewarm water only (not hot), thick yoghurt consistency.
- Careful application: without rubbing, working from roots to tips. Avoid massaging the scalp.
- Processing time: 45 minutes to 1 hour for a first application. You can extend to 2 hours for a more intense colour.
- Lukewarm water rinse: patient and gentle — plant-based powders may take longer to rinse out than conventional dyes.
When to see a doctor
Post-partum telogen effluvium is physiological and resolves on its own. Consult a dermatologist or your GP in the following cases:
- Shedding persists beyond 12 months post-partum
- Hair loss is accompanied by other symptoms (extreme fatigue, weight gain, dry skin — signs of hypothyroidism)
- Bald patches appear (may suggest associated alopecia areata)
- Shedding began during pregnancy rather than after
Our recommendation
Tresse Paris plant-based hair dye is perfectly suited to the post-partum period. It brings colour, volume and shine without harming an already challenged scalp. Compatible with breastfeeding, free from the allergens in chemical dyes, it is the ideal choice to revive a hair that is going through a major transition.
